Thanks, Garnie! The idea for this piece had been on my list of "things to try someday" for quite a while. It took more experimenting than I had anticipated, but I finally worked out something I could be pleased with. I think it would have been easier if the color had been one that I like (I really detest pink), but I have a lot of pink rayon on the racks and I figured if it didn't turn out well I'd have less of a problem throwing away pink than something else <G>. I had fun visiting your blog. I especially like the red necklace with the silver beads. Happy braiding!

This is amazing! I love how this came out. I have these straws from when my grandson was little. What a great way to put them to use! Thank you for the detailed instructions as I am still a newbie!
Have a very happy holiday season!

There are instructions for how to do the hollow braid structure on the disk in Rodrick Owen's maru dai book, Kathie. I've added a close-up photo of the "flower" at the kensaki so that you can see it more clearly. The arrangement of the threads during the braiding process look like the petals of a flower around the hollow center. I hope the new photo helps!

This does indeed look fun to do. I'd seen the peyote version but never thought to adapt it to kumi.
